Tyre Tread Depth – How to Check It and the Legal Limits

Your tyre tread depth plays a critical role in road safety. It affects grip, braking distance, fuel efficiency and your car’s ability to handle wet Irish roads. Driving with worn tyres not only increases the risk of accidents – it can also lead to penalty points and fines. This guide explains how to check your tyre tread depth properly, what the legal limit is in Ireland, and when it’s time to replace your tyres.

What Is Tyre Tread Depth?

Tyre tread depth refers to the measurement of the grooves in your tyre. These grooves are designed to channel water away from the surface of the tyre, maintaining contact with the road.

When tread becomes too shallow, especially in wet conditions, your stopping distance increases and the risk of aquaplaning rises significantly. For Irish weather, where wet roads are common year-round, maintaining safe tyre tread depth is essential.

What Is the Legal Tyre Tread Depth in Ireland?

In Ireland, the minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the entire circumference of the tyre and throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width.

If your tyres fall below 1.6mm:

  • You may receive penalty points

  • You can be fined

  • Your vehicle may fail its NCT

  • Your insurance could be affected in the event of a claim

While 1.6mm is the legal minimum, many safety organisations recommend replacing tyres at 3mm, particularly before winter, as grip performance drops sharply below this level.

How to Check Your Tyre Tread Depth

A tread depth gauge is inexpensive and gives the most reliable reading.

How to use it:

  1. Insert the probe into the deepest groove of the tyre.

  2. Press the gauge flat against the tread.

  3. Read the measurement in millimetres.

  4. Repeat at several points around the tyre.

Check the inner, middle and outer sections to ensure even wear. Modern tyres have built-in tread wear indicators – small raised bars located inside the grooves. If the tread is level with these bars, your tyre is at or below 1.6mm and must be replaced immediately.

The 20 Cent Coin Test – Quick Check

Insert a 20 cent coin into the main tread groove.

  • If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread may be close to or below the legal limit.

  • If it is covered by the tread, you are generally above the minimum.

This is a rough guide only – a proper gauge is more accurate.

Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

Replace your tyres if you notice:

  • Tread depth close to 1.6mm

  • Uneven wear patterns

  • Cracks or bulges in the sidewall

  • Vibration while driving

  • Reduced grip in wet conditions

If you are unsure, a professional inspection can confirm whether replacement is needed.
